We have all become aware of the need to protect our children from abuse. Our diocese has created a centralized, electronic database of those who work and minister in the Church: employees, those serving in the various ministries, including Religious Education teachers and aides; Preschool volunteers; liturgical ministers: lectors, extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist, children’s liturgy, lectors, ushers, members of organizations (Knights of Columbus/Christian Mothers) etc., along with those who volunteer in any parish events which will involve dealing with youth: festival workers, parish dinners, vacation bible school, etc. If anyone chooses not to register, he or she may not serve, minister or volunteer in the parish.
Persons 18 years of age or older who volunteer and/or come into contact with youth must complete an application to be on file with the Diocese of Pittsburgh. This project is being done to comply with the mandate of the U.S. Church’s Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People and also to meet the requirements.
The following are part of the Safe Environment Compliancy Program as outlined by the Diocese of Pittsburgh. Volunteers in any capacity, ministry or council must be compliant in order to serve.
Visit https://www.diopitt.org/parish-volunteers to get started. Follow the steps on the Instruction Card found HERE. (The access code is protect.)
